International Wichita FC takes on the 2022 Midwest South Conference Champions and UPSL National Semi-finalist Dodge City Toros this Saturday, April 15th at Stryker Soccer Complex in Wichita, Kansas. Doors open at 6:30pm and kick-off is at 7:30PM. This will be the first action of the 2023 season for International, coming off a 5-2-3 2022 season which earned the club a 3rd place finish in the conference.
Saturday’s game with be the third meeting in International’s history against the Toros with the black and yellow leading the series 1-1-0. International took all 3 points in a 2-1 victory in Dodge City when the clubs first meeting in 2022. Carlos Zuniga put International ahead 1-0 with goal in the first half. Both teams earned penalties in the second half and at the whistle International earned their first win of the 2022.
In the reverse leg in the 2022 season, both teams shared the points with the Toros scoring early in the first half and International responding with a goal from Muhamed Jammeh to seal the tie. The black and yellow were the only team in the conference not to lose to the Toros in 2022.
The Toros secured a 2-0 home victory over first year team FC Wichita to start off the 2023 UPSL campaign. Toros’ forward De Gannes scored a brace in the victory.
International Wichita FC’s Coach Lewis Derrett said, “The Toros got their first win last weekend against FC Wichita, so they’re leading off as they finished last season with a good result.” International has had two weeks of training ahead of Saturday nights match. Many of familiar faces returned to the club this season with a few additional faces to reinforce squad for another run at the championship.
“Probably not going to be exactly where I expect guys to be quality wise because it’s our first game and many new faces. But I expect guys to be hungry ready to win and to prove themselves. I expect hard work ethic.” said Derrett when ask about expectations for the game against Dodge City.
